I have this working theory about something I call a work energy archetype, and I think it could be the missing piece in how we understand our relationship with work. Have you ever met someone who genuinely seemed to love their job? Like, not just a “yay, it’s Friday” kind of love, but someone who looked like she actually wanted to be there in the middle of a Tuesday lunch shift?

I did. I was seventeen, working in a small-town diner, and one of the waitresses clearly thrived on being there. She flitted from table to table like a butterfly at a nectar buffet, making every single person feel like they were her friend. Her smile wasn’t for show, her energy wasn’t performative, she was lit up from the inside.

Contrast that with the rest of us. Our shoulders slumped as soon as we hit the kitchen, counting minutes until our shift was over. That experience stuck with me, even as I moved through different jobs and eventually started my own business.

Over the years, I began to notice patterns in how people experience work. It’s not just about the job or the title. It’s about the energy. I’ve found there are three distinct Work Energy Archetypes™ most people fall into at any given time: Survival Worker™, Stability Seeker™, and Fulfillment Seeker™.

Let’s talk about them, not from a place of judgment, but from honest, sometimes messy, human truth.

The Survival Worker

This archetype is stuck in the grind. Everything feels like a have-to, not a want-to. You might be deep in survival mode if you dread Mondays, procrastinate everything, and feel a low-grade exhaustion that never quite goes away.

You’ll hear them (or yourself) say:

  • “I just have to make it through the week.”
  • “It’s a paycheck.”
  • “I don’t have time to think about anything else right now.”

I lived here for years. Before I started my business, I bounced from job to job, never quite sure what I wanted but 100% sure I didn’t want that. And here’s the kicker: you can be a business owner and still be a Survival Worker. Hustling to keep the lights on can trap anyone in this energy.

Small shift: Remind yourself you have choices. They may not be easy, but they exist. Your current job isn’t a life sentence.

The Stability Seeker

This one hits especially hard for people who look successful on paper. You’ve got systems, structure, maybe even a solid income. But that spark? Missing.

You might say things like:

  • “As long as it gets done.”
  • “It’s good enough.”
  • “I’m just going through the motions.”

I’ve slipped into this work energy archetype more than once as a business owner. When things are working well, it’s easy to settle in. But eventually, the question creeps in: Is this all there is?

Small shift: Ask yourself if the comfort is worth the creeping sense of disconnection. What would it look like to have both security and joy?

The Fulfillment Seeker

This is where most of my clients land by the time they find me. They want work that feels aligned. They want their business to reflect their values, energy, and creativity. They aren’t chasing someone else’s version of success anymore.

But here’s what most people forget: being a Fulfillment Seeker isn’t a final destination. Alignment can shift. What lights you up today might drain you in a year. That’s normal.

Small shift: Build regular check-ins with yourself into your calendar. Ask: Is this still working for me? What needs to shift?

It’s Not About Getting It Right

Here’s the truth: you’re not one archetype forever. I’ve shifted between all three. Sometimes in the same year. Sometimes in the same month.

There’s no shame in recognizing where you are. What matters is what you do with that awareness.

You’re allowed to grow. You’re allowed to want more. And yes, you’re allowed to outgrow a job (or a business) that no longer fits.

So… which work energy archetype are you?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

What is a Work Energy Archetype™?

It’s a way of understanding how your current relationship with work affects your energy, decisions, and fulfillment. Once you identify your archetype, it becomes easier to see what kind of work actually supports your well-being and what’s draining the life out of you.

Can I shift my archetype over time?

Yes. Many people evolve from one archetype to another as they gain awareness and make intentional changes. Survival doesn’t have to be forever, and stability isn’t the finish line. Fulfillment is possible and it usually starts by noticing what no longer fits.

Do I need to quit my job or business to shift?

Not always. Some people make major life changes; others realign their mindset, boundaries, or daily practices without switching roles. It’s not about blowing things up…it’s about reconnecting with what matters.
