Why Overlooking AI is a Grave Mistake for Virtual Assistants: Turbocharge Your Skills Now

I know, I know—everything these days is about AI. It’s like the early days of social media all over again, where the hype was so overwhelming that many people decided to just ignore it. Fast forward a few years, and suddenly everyone was clamoring to hop on the social media train. The same cycle repeated with short-form videos, podcasts…you name it. I get it, the overwhelm is real. But seriously virtual assistants, ignoring AI is not an option.

I’ve been providing remote services for over 16 years, and yes, it’s tough to keep up with the latest and greatest trends. But in this case, turning a blind eye to AI is doing yourself, your business, and your clients a huge disservice. This isn’t about fearing AI will make your job obsolete; it’s about embracing AI to enhance your services, streamline your processes, and ultimately, boost your success.

 The ‘Get Rich Quick’ Scheme

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the ‘get rich quick with AI’ brigade bombarding your social media feeds. Remember when social media first exploded? Same story, different day. And just like then, these so-called experts might help you make a quick buck, but more often than not, you’re just padding their pockets. Plus, a lot of what they peddle isn’t sustainable, ethical, or sometimes even legal.

 So, if we’re not chasing ‘get rich quick’ schemes, what are we doing?

We’re learning to use AI as a tool to simplify and enhance what we already do. Instead of letting AI do everything, we’re leveraging it to save time, expand our knowledge, spark ideas, and provide a basic direction.

 Why not just let AI do it all?

Sure, you’ve heard folks say AI can write blog posts, articles, white papers, even books. But here’s the kicker: AI isn’t perfect. It lacks the human touch and emotions, meaning AI-generated content can fall flat and be riddled with errors and misinformation. The same goes for any project you might be tempted to hand off entirely to AI.

 The reality is, AI is only as good as the human using it.

When you learn to use AI as a tool, not a replacement, it becomes incredibly powerful. It can save you hours and make you better at what you do. One of my clients recently praised my use of AI on a podcast:

 “…I find I get a ton of use out of my virtual assistant who’s been with me for, actually, 17 years, and she’s excellent but she’s really turbocharged with the ability to use ChatGPT to do a lot of the assignments that I give her.”

Turbocharged—that’s the dream description for any virtual service provider, right? It’s not that ChatGPT is doing my work for me, but it helps speed up processes, conduct initial research (which I always fact-check), and more.

 How should virtual assistants and remote teams integrate AI?

Learn to use it. Create prompts. Modify and refine those prompts to get the desired output. Train AI. And how do you learn? By using it. Don’t ignore it, don’t fear it—dive in and get your hands dirty.

 What if you have a virtual or remote team?

If your team isn’t adopting AI, or you’re worried they aren’t fact-checking or considering the legal and ethical aspects, it’s time to act. Get them into some solid training. Create policies for AI use based on legal and ethical guidelines. Think of it as turbocharging your team.

Virtual assistants and service providers are uniquely positioned to stay ahead of the tech curve. Early adoption of social media turned many into social media managers; embracing online project management tools transformed others into online business managers. Embracing new tech has always been a stepping stone to greater success for us. AI is a gamechanger. Don’t ignore it.

 Artificial intelligence, deep learning, machine learning—whatever you’re doing, if you don’t understand it—learn it. Because otherwise, you’re going to be a dinosaur within three years.
