What’s Really Stopping You From Launching Your Home Business?

We all have different excuses.  I don’t have the money.  No one supports me.  I don’t know how to begin. There are as many different excuses for not following your dream of being your own boss as there are people who dream it.  No matter how many excuses you’re giving yourself, do you want to know what’s really stopping you from launching your home business?

You don’t believe you can.

There it is.  You are the biggest stumbling block when it comes to launching your business. It’s not lack of anything, because you can overcome those obstacles.  There are home businesses that can be started with little to no money.  Small business groups and friends can often provide the support you need.  There are people like me out there who can help you figure out where to start and what direction to go in.  Every one of those excuses are easily busted.

The one thing that can’t be so easily overcome is your own lack of faith in yourself.

I know because I’ve been there.  When I was working a job that had me in tears driving to and from work, my dream was to be my own boss.  Every time I missed something one of my kids was involved in because of work, I thought about how wonderful it would be to have some work/life balance.  Yet, I didn’t start my business until I got a pink slip and couldn’t find another job.  The reason it took a drastic situation like that was because deep down inside I doubted I had the ability to do it.  I feared I lacked the skills to do it. I feared failure.  But even more than that, I think my greatest fear was that it wouldn’t be the dream job I envisioned.

I got ‘lucky’

I was ‘lucky’ to get that pink slip, and I was ‘lucky’ that it was the start of the great recession and I couldn’t find another job.  It was the catalyst that pushed me past those fears and gave me the determination to build exactly the business I dreamt of.   Almost 13 years later, I can look back and understand I could have done it earlier. I did have everything I needed to be successful all along.  My doubts and fears were really the only obstacles that kept me from doing what I dreamt of doing so much earlier.

We are our own worst enemies when it comes to the negative messages tell ourselves.

There are articles and books about how important self-acceptance and self-love is to our well-being.  But there aren’t as many about how our self-doubts can sabotage our dreams. Particularly our dreams of owning our own home business.  The truth is, for most of us, we are more capable of being a business owner than we realize.

One of the first activities I have coaching clients do is create a comprehensive list of their skills, abilities and knowledge.  The reason is two-fold.  First, it’s a critical component in creating a business that fits them. More importantly, it’s empowering when you become aware of just how long and varied that list is.   Most of us aren’t consciously aware of just how much we know and how skilled we’ve become.  Realizing this goes a long way in silencing those doubts and fears that sabotage our dreams of launching a business.
