In light of my recent post admonishing businesses for relying on Facebook as their online presence the title of this post may sound a bit strange. For those of you who thought I was being a bit harsh about the need for a website I decided to see if I could find any reasons at all not to have one for your business.
This is what I came up with:
- You are fine with someone else owning your business name domain and using it instead of you. You also don’t care that an email address that ends with your business name is viewed by everyone as much more professional than one that ends in yahoo or gmail. Of course you should probably do a little research on why a domain name is important before you make those decisions. You’ll learn a lot, like how they are directly tied to your brand identity. By all means, don’t be concerned about how critical they may be to continued success of your business.
- You want to send your clients or customers to your competition. Yes, that’s exactly what you’re doing if you don’t have a website. Businesses that have websites agree that it gives them an advantage over their competition that doesn’t have one. We’re not just talking big business here, we’re talking small businesses, local businesses and even one person micro-businesses. Unless you started your business with the goal to fail, you want to be the one with the edge. And the website.
- You want to be the best kept secret in town, in fact, you don’t want anyone to know about your business at all. You can join the staggering numbers of small businesses that fail to see that a website is relevant to their business. They are wrong of course, but at least you won’t be alone in missing out on those millions of people who use the internet for literally everything. You’ll have company when your ideal customers or clients fail to find you online and go somewhere else. And you won’t be lonely in your false assumption that websites are too expensive. You can keep your secret that you’re in business until the day you have to close your doors. Which honestly will probably be sooner rather than later.
I seriously hope you don’t find any of these ‘valid’ reasons logical for your business. I wrote them sarcastically but sadly many, many small businesses might as well be claiming them. Look, the days of word of mouth and the Yellow Pages being the extent of your marketing strategy are long gone. Practically no one uses the Yellow or even the White pages anymore and although word of mouth can still occasionally work, it’s not nearly as effective as someone sharing your website with someone else.
