Why I Don't Use MySpace for My Business
One of the most popular services I provide is assistance with social media marketing. Would it shock you to know that I don’t have a business presence on MySpace? Well I don’t.
Social Media Marketing is the latest installment of online marketing. With the hype surrounding Twitter, businesses are now flocking to social media sites to sign up and get on board. And it’s quite possible they are wasting time and money by running headlong into the social media fray with no thought or direction.
It is always wise to get a feel for the site before you sign up and create a presence there. Some sites cater to different markets than others. Part of the wisdom of social media marketing is to connect to others in your target market or within your own industry. If those markets aren’t present on the site you’re signing up for you are defeating the purpose.
Let’s take MySpace for instance. Although I have a personal account there, I have not, and will not sign up for my business. I know from checking things out that this is a site that tends to draw a younger , less business focused audience. It’s a fantastic place for bands and musicians to find new listeners and build their fan base. It’s also a great place for businesses who market toward teens and young adults.
However it’s not such a great place for my business to find a useful network, unless of course I decide to expand my services to include providing assistance to bands and musicians. And while I may do so in the future, until I do so I’m better off concentrating on sites like LinkedIn or even Facebook which recently made changes to their service to make it more business friendly.
I believe that most businesses can find a way to use Twitter in a useful way, but when it comes to some of the other networking sites, be sure to check them out first to make sure that you’re expending time and effort where your offerings are going to be best appreciated.
