The business world is changing. Once upon a time being in business required a ‘brick and mortar’ office. Renting or leasing office space was required to establish your presence in the business world. And every good business person had a capable administrative assistant to make that office run smoothly. Then we discovered the Internet and everything changed. More and more professionals realized that what they did in the office could be done just as easily from home via their computer. By May of 2004 more than 20 million people in America were doing at least part of their job from home according to the U.S. Department of Labor. But with the flexibility of working from home, came the dilemma of how to handle the time consuming administrative tasks that used to be handled by in-office personnel.
Enter technology savvy, administrative professionals like Tina Hilton of Sanford, Maine. When the mortgage industry woes hit home this past July, she found herself without a job. That’s when she discovered there were people out there providing the same skills she had employed in her former position, over the internet. They called themselves ‘Virtual Assistants’, offering skilled administrative support to busy, business professionals.
